What Should I Expect During Group EMDR (G-TEP)?
What can I expect during Group EMDR (G-TEP) session?
Once you have completed the initial intake process, and you and your therapist have agreed that G-TEP is a good fit, you will be ready to attend your first Group EMDR session!
The beginning of the session begins with learning and practicing stabilization skills, guided by the group facilitator. You will also be asked to identify past and present “good memories” to help your brain access positive resources during this process, and your therapist will encourage you to share these positive experiences with the group.
After learning and implementing stabilization skills, we then take a 5-10 minute break to screen and ensure that clients in the group are ready to move into processing. If you are not, this is absolutely normal! For individuals that are not yet ready to move into processing their traumatic episode, we will provide you with a referral for individual therapy and skills to increase safety and emotional regulation.
Next, your therapist will help you identify “Points of Disturbance” (PoDs) related to your trauma while integrating bilateral stimulation (BLS). You will do this by tapping on a provided worksheet from side to side and following with your eyes.
At no point are G-TEP EMDR group members required, asked, or encouraged to discuss any details of their traumatic episode with others in the group.
Your therapist will continue to guide you through repeated BLS sets while you think of your PoD and occasionally report your level of disturbance from 0-10.
Towards the end of the session and after a set number of BLS sets, you will re-evaluate your overall level of disturbance of the episode and integrate new beliefs on your worksheet.
The group will end with a grounding exercise and discussion of your overall experience with other group members.
We always encourage you to follow up with your individual therapist and/or support system regarding your experience in the group process.

What is EMDR Therapy? What is BLS?
A little about the main technique used during EMDR. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy, and BLS stands for Bilateral Stimulation. EMDR therapy uses BLS (in various methods) to activate the natural healing process in the brain with the goal of activating both sides of the brain and begin to re-file memories into a more efficient and useful place in the brain and body
The GTEP EMDR Group is a gentle approach to work through everyday triggers and trauma symptoms, without discussing or going into the trauma. The group guidelines are fostered to ensure respect and privacy for our clients and to make it a less experience and safer way to process.
Criteria for G-TEP EMDR Group include that the client has experienced one or more stressful events (s). These events can be recent or long ago, but you know or suspect they still alter your experience in the present through triggers, symptoms, or unwanted behaviors. One of the things our therapists will look for during your intake is a demonstrated ability to self-regulate using resources and coping skills, if this is too difficult, no worries you can try one of our DBT Skills Groups first, or meet individually with one of our compassionate therapists.
