High School DBT® Program
The High School DBT® Program consists of:
For child and middle school aged clients, the research in the DBT community is pointing towards not putting pre-high school aged adolescents into skills class. This is due to their brain development and abstract thinking abilities. The creative answer for this population, is to teach the skills to the adolescent and parent on the same schedule as in the skills class; however, it will be done in a one family and one therapist setting. This will require two appointments per week, as the adolescent will still need to see their individual therapist weekly. To see more about child and middle school group click here.

- The individual aspect of the high school DBT® program focuses on helping the teen generalize skills taught in skills group to the client’s daily life. Individual therapy occurs weekly with a therapist who is highly trained and adept at understanding your family and teen’s dynamics. Your child will be learning a host of skills in weekly skills class; however, at times may need assistance in applying them in their own life. The individual therapist will also use the diary card. This is a document that the teen fills out daily to record their moods and behaviors, a tool for accurate reporting in individual therapy. The parent does not participate actively in the individual session typically; rapport and trust between client and therapist are paramount.
- The high school DBT® Skills Training Classes are intended for adolescents in high school. The classes provide an environment for members to learn and refine skills for daily coping. Our intensively trained DBT® clinicians closely adhere to, and are compliant with, full DBT® protocol. Skill class runs for approximately one year, meeting weekly for 90 minutes. Class is open to new members approximately every 7-9 weeks and a start date is determined during your intake appointment. Specific to the adolescent DBT® skills training class, a parent is required to attend and participate as well. Teens and parents practice mindfulness, review homework and learn new skills each week together. Note: It is recommended that the same parent attend each week.
- In addition to weekly therapy, skills generalization is also available during phone coaching. Phone coaching is a component to the comprehensive DBT® program in which you are permitted to call your therapist 24/7. Phone coaching consists of a 5-8 minute phone call prior to engaging in any maladaptive behavior in order to get help in figuring out which skills to use. Phone coaching is for the teen, not the parent. The parent will be connected with their own therapist help with skill generalization as needed.
